Federal Domes Styles and Types

In general there where two major differences in model 17 series domes over the years. The first model 17's from the late 40's had the 'slanted' dome made out of glass, later a plastic version was made available. (Figure 1)

When the 3 and 4 lamp versions (173-176) came out, they needed more clearance inside for the lamps and a larger dome was introduced. This dome had a larger diameter and required a different chrome skirt and of course the sides were more vertical, as in figure 2 & 3. this dome was available in both glass and plastic.  Except for the dual colors domes which were plastic only.

There was both a plastic dome and a Lexan dome, the part numbers do not reflect the difference. Apparently the type of material was changed and the part number remained the same. For the purpose of this reference page, I will combine the two types and use the terms Plastic, Acrylic, Polycarbonate, and Lexan interchangeably unless specifically noted.

Notice the slanted sides and how the chrome skirt folds in quite a ways.

This skirt has a smaller diameter hole and will not accept the larger domes shown at right.

The sides are nearly vertical, to allow room for the four light models. The diameter of the base is also larger than the early 17 dome at left.
